Deep-water new cedars 2-3 times per week for the first growing season. Each tree needs 5-10 gallons per watering. After establishment, cedars are drought-tolerant but benefit from weekly watering during Ottawa's dry summers.
Eastern White Cedar thrives in full sun to partial shade. They prefer well-drained soil but tolerate Ottawa's heavy clay. Amending with compost at planting time improves drainage and root growth.
Trim cedar hedges once per year in late June to early July, after new growth has hardened off. Never cut into old brown wood — cedars won't regrow from bare branches. Trim the top narrower than the base to let sunlight reach lower branches.
Wrap young cedars with burlap in late fall to protect from snow load and salt spray. Water thoroughly before freeze-up — winter desiccation is the #1 cause of cedar browning in Ottawa.
